2009 has come and gone in San Somewhere. The really big story last year was Hurricane Jimena. It hit most of Central Baja and passed directly over on September 2, 2009.
From Wikipedia:
On August 25th,
the National Hurricane Center began monitoring
a broad area of low pressure located over Central
America at that time,
with the system becoming a tropical
wave the next day. There were no signs of additional organization,
however,
the system became considerably better organized the next day and a tropical
depression began to form. Late on August 28th, the system was organized
enough to be classified as Tropical Depression Thirteen-E while located 250 miles
away from Acapulco. The depression soon intensified into the tenth
tropical storm of the season and received the name “Jimena”
The
newly-named storm intensified rapidly, doubling in intensity in just six hours.
It intensified from 40 mph
(65 km/h)
to 80 mph
(130 km/h)
during that time. Jimena continued rapid intensification and
reached Category 2 intensity that afternoon. The official
forecast called for Jimena to remain away from the coast, but the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory's
hurricane model anticipated
the hurricane to strike Baja
California.
It was also noted that the satellite estimates
had been playing, "catch up" all afternoon.
The
hurricane did not intensify further that evening, possibly due to an eye wall replacement cycle, where an eye
dissipates, only to be replaced by another eye. Despite this,
Jimena was upgraded to the season's third major hurricane before dawn the next
day when the eye reappeared on satellite imagery. Jimena was
upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane just six hours later. It continued to
strengthen and by the afternoon of August 31th, was nearly a Category 5
hurricane. Jimena may have briefly reached Category 5 intensity that
day, but it was never confirmed.
Weakening began early on Tuesday, September 1st, as another eye wall replacement cycle took place and continued into Wednesday, September 2nd as it entered cooler waters and interacted with the Baja California Peninsula. It made first landfall on Cabo San Lazaro that morning as a Category 2 hurricane, then re-entered the Pacific. It made a second landfall later the same day having weakened to Category 1 as it passed over San Somewhere. It entered into the Gulf of California the next day, when it soon dissipated.
Majority of damage was concentrated South of San Somewhere and "in and around" the surrounding areas.

Juan y Juan did not arrive until Sunday, September 6th, but a big "thank you" to Kim Hart and Megan Hansen for all the photos of the actual Hurricane.

Tillman, the Surfing/Snowboarding/Skateboarding Bulldog!

Did you see Tillman in this year's Rose Parade?
Tillman, the
surfing/snowboarding/skateboarding summer visitor to San Somewhere dog, showed
off his downhill dexterity on a snowboard during the 121st Rose Parade this
year. The 4-year-old bulldog has gained quite a following thanks his
“YouTube” videos and national appearances. Tillman loves all the sports it
seems…but his summers in San Somewhere are the best!
Tillman’s owner,
Ron Davis, says the pooch took up skateboarding years ago and snowboarding was
the obvious next step.
“One summer, it
was just too hot for two weeks in a row for him to skate, so I started
skim-boarding him and then tried surfing with him... it was amazing watching him
go. It is so cool with how good he became at all those sports. Then when winter
rolled around, we thought, ‘Hey, let’s take him snowboarding.’ He’s just
as crazy about snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding. He’s nuts about all of
them,” says
The President of
the Natural Balance Dog Food Company, Joey Herrick, came up with the idea for
snowboarding on the Rose Parade Float. Tillman had demonstrated his talent for
skateboarding on the Natural Balance sponsored float in January 2009...and was a
huge hit with the parade audience as well as the T.V.viewers.
This year, Herrick
organized for Tillman to star again, but this time…snowboarding on the float.
Tillman, was joined by four other trained bulldogs and they all took to the
“slope” down a 112 foot man-made mountain on what was the longest float in
Rose Parade. He was the hit of the Parade! (well, Captain Chesley “Sully”
Sullenberger/Rose Parade Grand Marshall, did get the biggest applause).
Tillman loves his Summer's in San Somewhere!!!

You "Go" Tillman!
Stay tuned...we'll slowly be putting the stories back on!
