"What
a long, strange trip it's been..."
It
seems like so long ago that Hurricane Jimena came
through Central Baja...even though it was just two
weeks ago.
It
was the most water ever that anyone in the area
can ever remember.
Although
San Somewhere was spared the force of the Hurricane,
the surrounding areas took a full hit
Flash
floods were a major issue. Thank goodness, no
human life was lost...but it was close in some
areas
Hopefully,
Panga
Beach
will be cleaned up (that's an act of nature that
was needed for sure!)
Los
Burros will never look the same. The ranch was
wiped out and this 20 foot wall of new gravel sits
there
Marcos
came in and was able to punch through, but it took
him two days to move the dirt. Luckily, with the
road crew's equipment in, the government came
in on a panga and gave the town permission to use
the loader
The
river seemed like it flowed a mile across
...and
a sign for sure that things are getting back to
normal, the first beer truck made it in on Sunday
The
Pesca boat that was washed up on shore....
...was
pulled off a few days ago at high tide by an
"Armada" of Pangas
Of
course, there was a small Armada of locals who
came to watch the show as well.
"Victory
at Sea" for sure!
The
beaches and arroyos are still not the same...
Dead
livestock all around and ...
...on
the beaches after the storm. This horse was in the
process of giving birth when it must have been
swept away by a wall of water
Life
and death for sure, but no humans loss of life
that was mentioned earlier. The arroyos and
beaches are now wide open for the
"recyclers". Everyone was out getting
old fence posts and palm logs that were washed
away and down to the ocean. These guys are really
happy with their haul. Fence posts are going for
about $4-$5 each. They must have at least $200 of
posts and recycled logs in that truck!
Boozie
and her team of volunteers have been unbelievable
during this whole event.
Boozie
rallied big time and was able to get over $7,500 +
in donations for the relief effort for those folks
in town who needed it , but more important, for
the families out in the back Ranch areas that were
completely destroyed or wiped out of almost all
their belongings.
One
of the Ranchers called her, "Saint Boozie".
Here, she is figuring out what Ranches the
group will go out to.
Her
and her group bought tons of supplies in
Constitucion with all the donated money that you
all sent to her Pay Pal account. Every single
dollar went to purchase supplies and will continue
to buy more as long as you send donations. This is
one donation where the money and supplies have
gone directly to those in need. No admin cost
here...it's all an act of love!
FYI,
"Super Ley Market" was not destroyed as reported. It
is fully operational. Some siding panels did get
blown away, but they fixed it within a week and
you can now get your fresh lettuce and other
supplies.
Yep.
Out at one of the Ranches...what a delivery
service!
A
special thank you to so many of you as well:
Terry/Megan, Mike/Kim, Babs/Cristo for your photos
and help, Matt/Brittany, Matt/Andrew, Paul, Duston,
Jaime, Guia and all the wonderful local
residents…plus many, many more of you who I
don't have all your names, that stepped up to
help or jumped in to deliver all the supplies
(which was 10-12 hour days in the back
country).
For
all of those who donated cash. Thank you big time.
You know who you are and the gift you gave was
just as important as the gift of time that so many
people in San Somewhere gave to help!
It
was not an easy job for sure
I
need to thank John Grube. I sent out a request last
Friday for a pump to clean out the water wells for
the ranches to share...
...it
was going to be a long time before they were able
to get their water supplies back and cleaned out.
John
jumped on the request, found out what was needed,
bought the "bailer" and personally flew
it down from
Santa
Barbara
on Sunday. It was a quick turn, as he needed to
get back to his patients on Monday morning. He
left
Santa Barbara
at
7:00
am
,
landed at Cadeje around
1:00
in the afternoon...
...put
together the equipment...
Showed
Jaime how it works so he could explain to the
Ranchers...
...and
was off just like that and heading back. He landed
back in
Santa
Barbara
at
9:00
PM
that same night. John is also very involved with
the Aero-Medicos that provide free medical clinics
to the rural people of Baja. He does this only for
the love of Baja and the people.
Also,
a special thank you to the Baja Bush Pilots. They
organized fast and were able to get medical
supplies to the rural areas as well. Boozie has
been in contact with them as to what is needed.
They just happen to have landed at a ranch when
they were there.
One
of the Baja Bush folks asking what else may be
needed.
In
the end, it's all about the people...
...and
the stories of their survival. Like this lady who
was able to live because she climbed up on top of
a concrete Pila to escape the rushing water...
...or
this young lady who was able to help save two
people by leading a horse with a rope on the
saddle and throwing it down into the arroyo to pull
the two folks up who were caught in the
rushing waters. There are many more stories that
will come out in the future...
...but
for now, the families are back together,
...and
starting to rebuild.
Life
continues to go on... the
Purisima
River
is down and new construction materials can be
delivered.
The
approach is still tough, but just veer to the
right and go into the river at first, then get
back on the crossing. You'll make it!
Power
lines are being repaired...
The
"green" is out in full force
...and
the local livestock are having a great time
munching on all the roadside goodies. Watch out
for the cows, donkeys, horses and sheep...their
all over!
so..."Viva"
Mexico
and to our friends South of the Border; we say
"thank you", for letting us enjoy your
resources as well!
Yep,
we all survived Jimena....
...and
we were happy to say, "Adios Jimena".
Hopefully,
the next one that comes our way, is a long time
away.
Thanks
again to everyone who pitched in the last two
weeks...your efforts really made the difference!
